Traveling through Dallas Love Field in February, you may notice over a dozen uniquely curated displays in the baggage claim hallway. The displays take travelers on a captivating journey through the history of the National Pan-Hellenic Council or The Divine Nine, a group of historically Black fraternities and sororities.IMG_9900

These organizations are particularly significant to the airport, as many of its employees are proud members of the Divine Nine and graduates of historically black colleges or universities (HBCUs). One of the thirteen cases highlights these employees sporting branded apparel and other paraphernalia related to their institutions or organizations.

“The 13-display exhibition is an expansion of last year’s celebration where we had only two displays,” Terminal Engagement Supervisor Renata Merritt said. “This year, we wanted to be more impactful and meaningful in showcasing the legacy of the Divine Nine, which was created to build community during the civil rights movement.”IMG_0013 (1)

The most moving of the cases, however, pays homage to Dallas police officer Darron Burks, who was shot and killed in the line of duty last August. Burks was a graduate of Paul Quinn College, which is also featured in one of the cases as Dallas’ only HBCU.

“These unique and innovative displays symbolize the Department of Aviation’s commitment to showcasing and honoring the value of African American culture,” Merritt added.

A celebratory reception for the exhibit, featuring special guests from various organizations, is planned for February 6 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
