Water is a vital natural resource, and we’re committed to using it wisely by making every drop count. Our strategy focuses on conserving water across airport facilities and preventing stormwater pollution to protect local waterways like Bachman Lake, located at Bachman Lake Park. The 205-acre park features a reservoir with132 acres of surface area.

From installing high-efficiency fixtures to managing runoff, we’re working to reduce our impact and keep our community’s water clean.

Water efficiency provides substantial support for operational resilience, climate adaptation, and long-term infrastructure planning by minimizing waste, optimizing resource use, and reducing vulnerability to climate impacts like drought and water scarcity.

Sustainability Master Plan Goals

ZERO WASTE BY 2040 - The Department of Aviation will achieve zero waste, defined as diverting at least 90% of generated waste materials from landfill disposal through means such as material reuse, recycling, or composting.

Sustainability in Action
Stormwater management measures are in place to prevent pollution of surface waters, including material containment practices and spill response procedures that minimize exposure to stormwater. An outfall closure system also protects Bachman Lake by halting stormwater flow in the event of a spill, safeguarding downstream water quality beyond the airport.

Water-efficient fixtures and HVAC systems are installed throughout terminal facilities, with regular maintenance ensuring ongoing water conservation and performance.
